Sausage you can make

I've opined about sausage at least once before. Making sausage is pretty fun. And if you're afraid to eat sausage because you've read some book about it, that's why you need to be making it yourself.

I'm in a hurry now, and will have to come back to tell you about my awesome (Thanks, Mom!), but Normal People don't have sausage stuffers, so I'm going to tell you about this cool Chinese sausage we made.

Sometimes, it's just an omelet

The table

Not every meal is inspired, but it can still be pretty. A plain old omelet looks prettier with some Tabasco Chipotle sprinkled around the plate. See?

When all else fails, make chocolate cake

Dinner was over. There was no dessert. The despondency of knowing that eating was over for the day was setting in without a tasty treat. Mike started melting some semisweet chocolate chips in a double boiler. He had some half-and-half. I made him add some butter, especially since it was only half-and-half. We thought we'd coat some strawberries with the chocolate. But then, I had an inspiration.

"Do you have any eggs?"

Ice Cubes for Breakfast

I heard a story this morning saying that the FDA is going to try to regulate salt in food. I think it should probably say that the FDA is going to try to regulate salt in food-like products. I recommend that you regulate your salt intake by putting as much salt as you want in, on and around food that you make yourself. I know what you're saying. "But what about the convenience of stuff in jars and canned stocks?" Making stock isn't that hard.

Coffee

Apparently I drink coffee now. I never really got into the whole coffee thing. I've dated a few coffee drinkers. The kind who were disappointed that I would merely make coffee for them to enjoy. If I didn't drink it too there was a problem. Like those people in high school who didn't want to be with you if you weren't drinking or smoking pot with them.

I like slaw

I like slaw.

Not the stuff swimming in mayonnaise, but cabbage with just a light vinaigrette. That's really all there is too it. Some kind of oil, some kind of acid and some salt and pepper. Really, that's all. Just go to your cabinet find some oil, even Wesson oil, and some vinegar, even white vinegar, maybe, whisk them up and add some thinly sliced cabbage. Salt and pepper to taste.

Paleo Staples

in

The first thing you need to do to eat a Paleo diet is to learn how to hunt and gather your food. The hard part, for many people, is understanding that most of what is sold in the grocery store isn't really food. Instead there are a wide variety of food-like products. Read the label on almost anything that comes in a package. Does it have more than five ingredients? Include stuff that you can't pronounce? Contain high fructose corn syrup? Is not something that your great-great-grandmother would recognize as being food? (Thanks to Michael Pollan.) Put it down and move away from that aisle.

Blackened Salmon Salad--Freezer to Plate in 30 Minutes

This is an easy and delicious meal that uses only ingredients that keep a long time, so it's a good fall back when you haven't been able to get out of the cave to the hunting and gathering grounds. You can have it on the table faster than a pizza would get delivered.

Ragu: In Which I Suggest that You Shouldn't Trust Others to Make Your Food

I have to admit that I'm something of a food snob. It's not the kinds of food that I'm snobby about though, it's the quality. I'd much rather eat real not-from-a-box macaroni and cheese than frozen fettuccine Alfredo (especially when real Alfredo sauce is so easy to make, but that's another story). Oh, wait, I'm trying to go with this Paleo theme, so forget I mentioned pasta, but read on about how to make a decent pasta sauce and one way to eat it without pasta.

In Which I Consider Going Paleo

On Saturday Crossfit Knoxvillelocal (see Crossfit.com for more info on Crossfit) held a nutrition seminar instead of the usual free workout. The main point of the seminar was to push the Paleo Diet and a Paleo/Leaning Challenge.

The basis of the Paleo diet is that our species hasn't evolved that much since Paleolithic times, so we should be eating what cavemen ate. The argument is basically that if they didn't eat it, then we as a species weren't designed to eat it. Though I'm not sure that I buy in to the argument that we shouldn't eat stuff that cavemen didn't or couldn't, but of stuff about the Paleo diet makes pretty good sense to me.

Read on to learn more about how and why we might be better off eating like cave men and women.
